‘Male Involvement during Pregnancy and Childbirth’ project in the district of Marracuene

ICRH Mozambique and the Maputo Provincial Health Directorate have launched the Project ‘Male Engagement during Pregnancy and Childbirth’ in the Marracuene District in Maputo. The study aims to test a gender-sensitive package to improve male engagement in maternal care. We also want to examine barriers and enablers for male involvement in maternal care, including antenatal care and during childbirth.

We aim to strengthen the health system in order to overcome existing barriers, to train health providers in gender and friendly care for couples, to improve privacy conditions, and to introduce consultations for couples and partners’ attendance at delivery.

Community engagement activities are planned with community outreach sessions for male engagement through the film ‘Pregnancy is ours’ by researcher and colleague Anna Galle. The project involves a study with a mixed approach, qualitative and quantitative, with the purpose of advocating for the improvement of programs and policies for male involvement in maternal health care.
