Prof. Dr. Marleen Temmerman

Full Professor

Since 2012, Prof dr Marleen Temmerman is the Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR), at the World Health Organization (WHO).  RHR is the main instrument within the United Nations system for research in human reproduction and sexual and reproductive health, bringing together policy-makers and programmers, scientists, health care providers, clinicians, consumers and community representatives to identify and address priorities for research to improve sexual and reproductive health.   
She is a full Professor OB/GYN at the Ghent University in Belgium, currently with leave of absence. She has a strong academic background with over 400 publications and books in the area of women’s health. She is the Founding Director of ICRH, the International Centre for Reproductive Health, with offices at Ghent University, Belgium, in Kenya and Mozambique and collaboration agreements with Universities and Research Institutes allover the world.
As an Obstetrician-Gynaecologist with over 30 years of clinical  expertise, she supervised over 18,000 births in many parts of the world, unfortunately with too many (72) maternal deaths, most of them preventable, and was part of many womens life.
In 2007, Marleen Temmerman was elected as a Senator in the Belgian Parliament where she was member of the Commission on Social Affairs, and chair of the Commission on Foreign Affairs. In that capacity, she was  a member of the European Parliamentary Forum and chair of the HIV/AIDS Advisory Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. She served as a member of the iERG (independent expert review group) till 2012.
