Ms. Nathalie Van der Heijden

Post-doctoral researcher

Who? As Molecular Biologist (graduated from UCL), I obtained my PhD at the University of Liège (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) and was active in the field of Veterinary Virology for vaccination/diagnostic purposes. During my post-doc at UGent (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), I contributed to the discovery of a novel viral receptor for the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus, an economically important pathogen for the swine industry worldwide. Later on, I was project manager for a FP7 project (PoRRSCon) involving 15 partners including China and Vietnam, scientifically coordinated by Prof. Hans Nauwynck (UGent). I co/organised 2 international congresses in Ghent and am also taking care of the annual meetings of the Belgian Society for Virology (BELVIR), a non-profit organisation, that aims to bring together all Belgian virologists and provide a state-of-the-art overview of virology-related research in Belgium and abroad.
What? I will be involved in the project management  of the H2020 ELEVATE 'Early detection of cervical cancer in hard-to-reach populations of women through portable and point-of-care HPV testing'. This project, coordinated by Prof. Olivier Degomme, started on January 1st, 2019 and aims to develop a new portable test for detecting human papillomaviruses that are causing cervical cancer.
